Abstract
- The rescue operation went wrong on the return journey. The French military convoy escorting the refugees passed through a checkpoint manned by the Tutsi RPF. Shortly afterwards, the convoy came under fire from a nearby hill. French soldiers returned fire, notably using light machine guns. There were no French casualties, and no information regarding potential casualties on the RPF side.
- Today in Butare, troops from Operation Turquoise evacuated 700 orphans and 250 adults. The city has become a strategic prize for both Tutsis and Hutus. Hutu government forces still hold Butare, but tonight the two sides are facing each other.
- According to UN military experts, the fall of Butare would signal the beginning of the end for Hutu forces.
