Abstract
- Defense Minister François Léotard is standing firm on France's position regarding Rwanda. This afternoon, he responded to critics, specifically Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, who have called for a withdrawal.
- François Léotard: "To claim that we could, given the new situation and the hundreds of thousands of refugees coming from Zaire, ensure the protection of more than a million people is neither reasonable nor responsible. Because it simply isn't true! Because it is completely impossible! And if we were to leave these camps now, as is being proposed, the atrocities and massacres would resume. Who could fail to understand that? So, if such statements are made for reasons of domestic politics, I find that regrettable. It undermines the credibility of those who speak in such terms".
