Abstract
- Carnage and exodus continue to drain Rwanda of its blood. Shaking once again its apathy when it is too late, the international community finally seems to take the measure of the disaster: this evening Washington says it is ready to finance a multinational peace force provided by the UN and the Organization of African Unity.
- The exodus: there are at least 250,000 men and women fleeing their country, fleeing the massacres that killed more than 100,000 people in Rwanda. On foot they reach the border with Tanzania. There they settled in makeshift huts. Parents and children crowd into a camp that stretches as far as the eye can see. The Tanzanian authorities are already overwhelmed, food could run out quickly.
- But since yesterday [1st May] this flow of refugees seems less important because civilians now fear being killed when they reach the border.
