Abstract
- Abroad in Rwanda, the fighting in Kigali and other parts of the country is causing a new mass exodus of inhabitants. The assessments are more and more painful.
- 500,000 dead! Not to mention the injured. This is the assessment of the massacres advanced for the moment both on the side of humanitarian organizations and on the side of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
- A toll that is growing with the continuation of heavy fighting today in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, and in other regions. The forces of the Rwandan Patriotic Front, a Tutsi armed opposition, have launched an offensive a few days ago about forty kilometers south-west of Kigali, a region where the interim government has taken refuge. These fights would have led to new massacres.
- They also led to a new massive exodus of refugees in the center of the country. There, the displaced persons number in the hundreds of thousands according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
- The French Minister of Health, Philippe Douste-Blazy, is currently in Burundi and Tanzania, neighboring states of Rwanda. In particular, he visited two refugee camps in northern Burundi today. Refugees threatened by cholera, dysentery, typhoid, hepatitis. The water in the rivers, polluted in particular by corpses, is the source of all these diseases.
