In his book Le Monde, un contre-pouvoir ? (ed. L'Esprit frappeur, October 1999, p. 57), Jean-Paul Gouteux comments on this chronology as follows: "In the future, historians who would study the genocide [of the Tutsi] in Rwanda with the help of this chronology of Le Monde would see only a very moderate response (11 people) from the faithful of the assassinated president. This reaction, ultimately quite understandable, would have been followed by a civil war where the two parties carry out equivalent massacres... Not a word of the militias and racist killings, systematic and organized by the state apparatus. Le Monde does not say that the 'massacres of civilians' concern the killing, with machetes, of men, women and children, for the sole reason that they are Tutsi".
