NAIROBI, Aug 31 (AFP) - The U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) on Tuesday moved most of its fleet of trucks previously used to transport relief supplies in Somalia to its emergency food aid effort in Rwanda.
The fleet, jointly operated by WFP and the governments of Ethiopia and Eritrea, has completed most of its work in Somalia where the humanitarian effort has shifted from emergency food provision to rehabilitation and reconstruction, a WFP statement released here said.
Thirty-two long-haul trucks and 25 trailers, which arrived in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa from Mogadishu earlier this month, left the port for Rwanda Tuesday carrying 564 tonnes of sugar and vegetable oil.
The trucks will be used to transport some 6,000 tonnes of relief food every month from the Ugandan capital of Kampala to an estimated 900,000 displaced people in Rwanda.
