NAIROBI, Sept 22 (AFP) - Some 1,000 people have fled the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC - the former Zaire) to western Uganda over the past two weeks, the UN refugee agency said Monday.
Peter Kessler, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesman in Nairobi, said about 1,000 refugees had arrived in the Kisoro border district.
"But some go home during the day and come back at night," he added.
Kessler was unable to say whether the refugees were fleeing fighting in DRC.
A refugee camp was set up in Kisoro last year for refugees fleeing the former Zaire, but it was closed following the capture of Kinshasa by the forces of now DRC President Laurent Kabila.
Several thousand ethnic Tutsis from the eastern DRC province of Masisi have recently fled to Rwanda, which borders Uganda to the south, following an upsurge of clashes between government forces and various militias operating in the area.
