DAR ES SALAAM, Aug 8 (AFP) - Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Secretary-general Salim Ahmed Salim has arrived in the Tanzanian capital on his way to the northern town of Arusha to attend the second phase of Rwanda peace talks scheduled to start Monday.
Tanzanian foreign ministry officials said Salim, who arrived late Thursday, met President Ali Hassan Mwinyi and was scheduled to consult with Foreign Minister Ahmed Hassan Diria before proceeding to Arusha for a pre-talks meeting with Rwandan government officials and representatives from the rebel Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) on Sunday.
Next week's talks in Arusha will be a follow-up to the first round held at the same venue last month, leading to the signing of a ceasefire agreement.
The ceasefire, to be supervised by a team of 50 neutral military observers, took effect July 31. The government has since accused the rebels of violating the ceasefire at least seven times.
So far only ten observers from Senegal have arrived in Rwanda.
A senior Tanzanian foreign ministry official, Aammy Mpungwe, told AFP other observers are expected to arrive during the weekend from Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Egypt.
According to the ceasefire agreement, the Rwandan government and the rebels will also provide five observers each.
