(19 Jun 1994) Former French Health Minister Bernard Kouchner on Saturday (18/6) oversaw an evacuation of hundreds of Hutu and Tutsi refugees in Kigali. The Tutsi refugees were taken from the Mille Collines hotel in the centre of the city and delivered into territory held by the RPF. The Hutu refugees were escorted from the King Faisal Hospital to an area outside the city controlled by government forces. Kouchner visited the Saint Michel orphanage, home to children he was still hoping to escort out of Kigali. He also toured the Centre Hospitalaire de Kigali, a government hospital believed to contain wounded soldiers. Most of the beds, however, were empty and no doctors and no medicine were evident.
