NAIROBI, Dec 20 (AFP) - Heavy fighting has erupted inside Rwanda's border with Uganda between government forces and Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) rebels, state-run radio Uganda said in a broadcast monitored here on Friday.
The radio, quoting the official New Vision newspaper, said a battle was taking place two kilometres inside Rwanda. It did not say when the latest fighting started, nor give casualty figures.
The radio also gave no exact location of the fighting, nor indicate the numbers of people involved.
But in a separate broadcast monitored here on Friday, the state-owned radio Rwanda reported that the situation at the Rwandan-Ugandan border was calm, apart from the usual guerrilla attacks on Rwandan territory by the rebels from the Ugandan side of the border
.
Rwanda has persistently accused Uganda of supporting the rebels, composed many of the minority Tutsi refugees who fled Rwanda into Uganda nearly three decades ago to escape tribal fighting.
Most of the rebels were serving in the Ugandan army, before they deserted with their arms to launch an unsuccessful invasion of Rwanda on October 2 last year. The Ugandan government has strongly denied aiding the rebels.
