A BRITISH nun was last night free after a 10-week ordeal as soldiers
occupied her convent in Rwanda.
Sister Susan McLean, 42, and her fellow missionaries were subjected
nightly to mock executions and threatened with death if they offered
sanctuary to desperate civilians.
She was among 43 nuns and orphans freed by French special forces who
flew them to safety in Zaire yesterday.
The sisters were forced to turn away people begging for sanctuary, even
though this meant condemning many to death in the war. The nuns are
likely to be flown to Paris.
