UNITED NATIONS, Oct 19 (AFP) - Canadian General Romeo Dallaire was named Monday to head the U.N. peacekeeping team in Rwanda to help implement a peace agreement, it was announced Tuesday.
The U.N. Security Council informed U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali that it had approved the nomination in a letter to him which was released Tuesday.
The panel voted October 5 to send U.N. peacekeepers to Rwanda that will number more than 2,500 soldiers at its peak in 1994. Elections are scheduled for 1995.
The Rwandan government and rebel Rwandan Patriotic Front signed an agreement in August 1992 to end a 22-month civil war between the majority Hutu and minority Tutsi tribes.
