NAIROBI, Dec 12 (AFP) - Rwandan Patriotic Front rebels bombarded a refugee camp in Rwanda's northeastern town of Rushaki with heavy artillery fired from Ugandan territory on Tuesday, killing several people, state-owned radio Rwanda reported on Thursday.
The radio broadcast, monitored here, said Rwandan forces retaliated, forcing the rebels to retreat to their bases inside Uganda.
The radio did not give the number of people killed, but said that housing has also been damaged.
"Civilians were killed, churches, schools and hospitals were reduced to rubble by the bombs", the radio said.
Rushaki, the site of the bombing, is in Mukarange district, some 26 kilometres (15 miles) southeast of the Ugandan town of Mbarara.
Another camp housing about 4,000 refugees inside Rwanda is near Muvumba, some 45 kms (28 miles) east of Mbarara.
