Intense fighting resumed on June 17 in Kigali between the RPF and government forces, despite the ceasefire established from Tunis on the sidelines of the OAU summit. While Alain Juppé affirmed that the French intervention would be a humanitarian operation, the RPF declared for its part that "France intends to fight alongside the murderous extremist clique".
