PARIS, April 18 (Reuter) - The head of the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) appealed to Rwandans on
Monday to stop massacring one another.

Faced with the appalling events unfolding today in Rwanda, there is
only one thing that can be said: Stop!' UNESCO Director-General
Federico Mayor said in a statement.

In the name of the intellectual organisation of the United Nations
system, I ask you, I beg you to stop, he said.

Thousands of people have died in 11 days of ethnic violence in the
central African country.
