BRUSSELS, April 9 (Reuter) - Rwandan parliament president Theodor
Sindikugabo has proclaimed himself the new president of the central
African state, the Belgian news agency Belga reported on Saturday.
Sindikugabo presented on national radio a new government made up with
the agreement of the five parties which formed the preceding
government, Belga said, quoting a report from the Rwandan capital
Kigali carried by the Flemish BRTN radio station.
Jean Kambada was named as the new prime minister of Rwanda, which has
been racked by two days of tribal bloodletting and renewed civil war
feared to have cost thousands of lives.
Other appointments were Jerome Bicyamhumaka as foreign minister and
Faustin Munyaneza as interior minister.
Sindikugabo said his government agenda included the effective running
of the country and added that particular attention would be paid to
security.
He said he planned the pursue negotiations with the rebel Rwandan
Patriotic Front with a view to installing a transitional government in
six weeks.
His government would also be charged with finding a solution to famine
in the country and looking after the return of those who had fled the
fighting, he said.
Sindikugabo called on the army to show discipline and thanked the
international community for its support and understanding.
The violence in Rwanda was triggered by the murder of the presidents of
both Rwanda and neighbouring Burundi late on Wednesday.
The U.N. Security Council reported a marked improvement in the
situation in Rwanda late on Friday, with agreement among various
factions on a ceasefire and the appointment of the interim government.
