BRUSSELS, April 9 (Reuter) - Fighting is continuing between rebels and
government forces in the Rwandan capital Kigali despite previous
agreement on a ceasefire, the officer in charge of Belgian U.N.
peacekeepers there said on Saturday.
Colonel Luc Marchal told Belgian radio there was gunfire. Asked whether
a ceasefire was holding, he said: Certainly not. The two sides are
still fighting.
The U.N. Security Council in New York had reported a marked improvement
in the situation in Rwanda late on Friday, with agreement among various
factions on a ceasefire and the appointment of an interim government.
France has sent troops to Kigali to help prepare for a possible
evacuation of French nationals. An orgy of violence has swept the
former Belgian colony since its president was assassinated on
Wednesday.
